seeing in the dark

TN’s rare condition is known as blindsight. Because his stroke damaged only his visual cortex, his eyes remain functional and as a result can still gather information from his environment. He simply lacks the visual cortex to process and interpret it. Sight has changed for TN from a conscious to a largely subconscious experience. He no longer has a definitive picture of his surroundings, but he has retained an innate awareness of his position in the world. He is, to some degree, able to see without being aware that he is seeing.

Almost 40% of Americans still support the idea of books

Campaigners have described the project as insensitive and a deliberate act of provocation by people with brains.

The issue is forming a dividing line in advance of November's mid-term congressional elections with candidates being forced to declare whether they have ever been to a library or spoken to someone who has books in their home.

Mystery solved: Americans avoid indigenous water because nothing scares us more than unfamiliar bathroom technology. No matter how hot the Delhi day, no matter how cold the Coke in the glistening glass before us, we’ll still push it away if we spot even a single ice cube floating in it. Because in our paranoid tourist minds, that single ice cube is a direct bacterial link to a back alley squat toilet—and, worse, that little plastic water bucket that we don’t know how to use and by god, we don’t want to.
